CBET assessments: formative and summative

Updated 31 Oct 2026

Short answer

Formative assessments are the continuous tests a trainer gives during the term to check progress; summative assessment comes at the end of the module and decides competence. In CBET both use written, oral and practical work, marked against the performance criteria with marking schemes and observation checklists.

What InteligentCMS makes

Marks that match CDACC

Upload the unit's official CDACC performance-criteria weighting document and every mark follows it exactly. Without it, the papers default to 50, 50 and 100 marks. See the CDACC assessments guide.

Make it with InteligentCMS

  1. Open Formative Assessments and pick the mode (written, oral, practical).
  2. Upload the unit curriculum, plus the CDACC weighting document if you have it.
  3. Check the order summary and generate.
  4. Download the papers, marking schemes and checklists in one ZIP.

Questions trainers ask

How many formative assessments do I get per unit?

Three: early, middle and late in the term. Small units are split within an element to reach three; large units are combined down to three.

What is an observation checklist?

The assessor's sheet for practical work: each line is one check of something the task asked for, with a Competent / Not Yet Competent verdict.

What is a Table of Specification?

The blueprint of a summative tool: marks per element spread across levels of thinking, plus practical marks. It comes with Summative Tools.

Are Summative Tools for every trainer?

No. Summative Tools are priced and credited separately and are meant for contracted tool developers.
